Diversita's 5 Tips for an Interview!

Diversita.co.uk is dedicated to supporting neurodivergent candidates. Here's some of our tips when preparing for an interview.

1. Preparation is Key

Research the Company: Understanding the company’s values, culture, and the specifics of the role can provide a sense of familiarity and confidence.

Know the Job Description: Break down the job description into manageable parts.

2. Leverage Your Strengths

Highlight Your Strengths: Focussing on skills and your strengths, using examples of practical use of your skills helps to emphasise these strengths and how they benefit the prospective employer.

Share Your Perspective: Everyone sees things differently, sharing your perspective and alternative ways of thinking helps to highlight how you work and process information.

3. Request Accommodations

Communicate Your Needs: Don’t hesitate to ask for accommodations that can help you perform at your best. This might include extended time for interviews, written questions in advance, or a quiet interview environment.

Take time to set the scene: Preparing your notes and interview space (if taking place remote) can make a huge difference, making sure your space is comfortable, without unnecessary distractions, and any notes or reminders in place are readily available can ease anxiety and keep things on track.

4. During the Interview

Stay Grounded: Use grounding techniques such as deep breathing or small, discreet fidget items to manage anxiety. Taking a moment to compose yourself before answering a question is perfectly acceptable, don't be afraid to allow silence to answer questions correctly.

Ask for Clarification: If a question is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask the interviewer to rephrase or elaborate. It’s better to seek clarity than to provide an off-target response.

Use Notes: Bring a notebook with key points and questions you want to ask. This not only shows preparedness but also serves as a helpful reference during the interview.

5. Post-Interview Strategies

Reflect and Learn: After the interview, take time to reflect on what went well and identify areas for improvement. This can help you refine your approach for future interviews.

Send a Thank-You Note: Follow up with a thank-you email to express your appreciation for the opportunity. Highlight a key point from the interview to reinforce your interest and professionalism.
